The Space Race started when he Soviets launched the satellite Sputnik I, but Kennedy's part in the space race was the Apollo program. The Apollo program's mission was to put man on the moon. This was accomplished by Apollo 11, and then more missions to the moon were done for research. It made many major milestones in US space missions, and there were only two major disasters during the Apollo missions: The first was the landing pad fire on Apollo 1, resulting in the deaths of all three astronauts on the ship. The second was an oxygen tank rupture during Apollo 13. Apollo 8 was the first manned orbit around another body in space, and Apollo 17 was the last moon-walk. << Back
